What is Private Pilates?
Private Pilates means one-to-one teaching: a session between you and your teacher alone. The whole time is yours — your body, your level and your goals are at the centre. At Classical Pilates Berlin you train on a range of apparatus in your private session. You get corrections and support, we work hands-on, and we guide you safely towards your training goal.
Unlike a group class, a private session involves no compromises: every exercise, every tempo and every correction is tailored to you. We linger where you need time, and move on as soon as you are ready. This is exactly what makes a private Pilates session the most effective way to learn the method properly. And because we can work directly with your own wishes and goals, this is where the positive changes in your body show fastest.
Who are sessions for?
Private Pilates sessions suit almost anyone — but they are especially valuable in these situations:
- Beginners who want to learn the fundamentals cleanly from the very start.
- People with injuries or discomfort who need safe, adapted guidance.
- Practitioners with specific goals — more mobility, strength, posture or stability.
- Experienced practitioners who want to refine their technique and go deeper into the method.
- Busy people who want focused, efficient training at fixed times.
Because the session is entirely tailored to you, it adapts to your pace — not the other way around. For people who feel unsure in groups, or who bring a very individual body to the work, a private session is often the most comfortable and the safest way to begin with Pilates.
The benefits of Private Pilates
One-to-one sessions bring several benefits that are simply not possible in a group:
- Full attention. Your teacher watches you for the entire session and corrects in real time — with precise hands-on feedback.
- Individually tailored. Every exercise is adapted to your body, your goals and how you feel that day.
- Fastest progress. Direct guidance means you learn movements correctly from the start and avoid mistakes that are hard to correct later.
- Safe with discomfort. Exercises can be dosed and adapted with precision — ideal for back pain or during rehabilitation.
- Flexible and focused. You use the time fully, with no waiting and no compromises.
There is one more benefit that often goes unnoticed: in a private session you can ask a question the moment it comes up. You do not have to wait until your teacher has a spare moment, and the answer fits your exact situation. Early on especially, that immediate understanding speeds up learning enormously — from the first session you build a clear physical sense of the method.
What a private session looks like
Here is what a typical private Pilates session with us looks like:
- Arrival and check-in. At the start we briefly discuss how you are, what you want to work on and whether there is any discomfort to take into account.
- Setting up on the apparatus. We work with the right equipment — Reformer, Tower (Cadillac), Chair, Arm Chair, Spine Corrector, Ladder Barrel, Push-up Devices or Mat — depending on your goal and level.
- Guided training. You move through carefully chosen exercises of the classical method, with precise corrections and hands-on assistance.
- Closing and next steps. At the end we put what you achieved into context and set the next steps, so your training builds continuously from session to session.
Every session follows the progressive structure of Joseph Pilates’ classical system — with the difference that everything is precisely tailored to you.
What makes a private session especially valuable is the quality of the correction. Classical Pilates is all about precision: the exact position of the pelvis, the length of the spine, the use of the breath. Such fine details are conveyed best in a one-to-one setting — with words, with hands-on help and with the right resistance on the apparatus. What you learn here carries you through every further session, whether private or in a group.
Private or group?
Many people wonder whether they should train privately or in a group. Our recommendation: start with a series of private sessions to learn the method safely. You build a clean technical foundation and internalise the principles of classical Pilates.
After that, the choice is yours: you can continue privately, move into our small groups, or combine both. Many practitioners value the mix — the depth of a private session and the energy of a small group complement each other beautifully.
When is private the better choice? Whenever you are working towards a specific goal, dealing with discomfort or an injury, want to progress quickly and cleanly, or simply prefer your teacher’s undivided attention. A small group, in turn, is a lovely way to train regularly, to be carried along by practising together and to keep the method in motion. Both follow the same authentic, classical method with us — the difference lies only in the format, not in the content.
How to start with Private Pilates
Getting started is simple: a first private session is the ideal way to get to know the method and our studio. We take time for your goals and tailor your training to you from the very first minute. Wear close-fitting clothing you can move freely in, and arrive about five minutes before your session so you can settle in.
All solo and duo sessions can also be requested online. That works well when you cannot make it to Kreuzberg, are travelling, or would rather train at home on the mat. Write to us with what you need and we will find a time.
You will find our boutique studio at Cuvrystrasse 35, 10997 Berlin — in the heart of Kreuzberg, easily reached from Friedrichshain, Neukölln and Mitte, close to U1/U3 Schlesisches Tor. Write to us via our contact page, and we will arrange your first private Pilates session.
