In Berlin-Kreuzberg we teach classical Pilates — the original method, with set exercise sequences and a lot of precision. Small groups let us give plenty of individual corrections and hands-on teaching.

What is Classical Pilates?

Classical Pilates is the original form of the Pilates method, exactly as its founder Joseph Pilates developed and taught it. At its heart is a carefully structured, progressive system of set exercise sequences that combines strength, mobility, breath and concentration in every single session.

Classical Pilates is far more than a collection of exercises. It is a complete movement form with an internal logic: each exercise prepares the next, each session follows a clear progression, and the entire repertoire — from the mat to the Reformer — interlocks. This fidelity to the original method is what makes it “classical”.

Classical vs. Contemporary Pilates

Today, very different things are offered under the name “Pilates”. The most important distinction runs between Classical and Contemporary Pilates:

  • Classical Pilates follows the original exercise order, the classical apparatus and the system Joseph Pilates left behind. The sequence of exercises, the transitions and the rhythm are part of the method itself.
  • Contemporary Pilates modifies and supplements this repertoire. Exercises are reordered, simplified or expanded with other elements from a variety of movement practices.

Both approaches have their place. At Classical Pilates Berlin we have deliberately chosen the authentic, classical method.

The classical system

Classical Pilates is a progressive system — the exercises build logically on one another. Beginners start with the foundational movements that organise the spine, pelvis and breath. As control grows, more demanding exercises are added.

Joseph Pilates originally called his method “Contrology” — the art of conscious control over your own body. Six principles run through every session:

  1. Control — “Contrology begins with the mind control over muscles.” (Joe)
  2. Concentration — “For the first time in many years their minds have been truly awakened.” (Joe)
  3. Centering — All movements must come from a strong stable base.
  4. Breath — “Even if you follow no other instructions, learn how to breathe correctly.” (Joe)
  5. Precision — It is the detail that makes the difference.
  6. Flow — “A minimum of movement for a maximum of flow.” (Romana)

The classical apparatus

Classical Pilates lives through the equipment Joseph Pilates designed himself. With us you train on the complete classical apparatus:

  • Reformer — the iconic machine with a carriage and spring resistance
  • Tower / Cadillac — for guided strengthening and mobilising work
  • Chair (Wunda Chair, Low Chair and High Chair) — compact and demanding, ideal for strength and stability
  • Spine Corrector — for spinal mobility and alignment
  • Ladder Barrel — for stretch, rotation and extension
  • Arm Chair and Push-up Devices — for the shoulder girdle, arms and trunk strength
  • Mat and small equipment — Barrel, Magic Circle, Toe Corrector and Foot Corrector, the foundation of the whole system

These machines use spring resistance rather than weights. The springs give you feedback: you feel where one side is working harder than the other, and can uncover and even out muscular imbalances that way. It is less about building raw strength than about the connections through the body — and about creating space in the joints.

Who is Classical Pilates for?

Classical Pilates suits almost every body and every level:

  • Beginners who want to build a solid, safe movement foundation
  • Experienced practitioners who want to refine precision, strength and mobility
  • People with back discomfort who want to strengthen their deep core
  • Pregnant women and new mothers who want to maintain their level and rebuild it afterwards
  • Athletes, dancers and performers seeking control and stability

Because we work in small groups and with individual attention, we adapt every session to your starting point.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Classical Pilates?
Classical Pilates is the original method of Joseph Pilates: a progressive system of set exercise sequences, taught on the classical apparatus — Reformer, Tower, Chair, Spine Corrector and Ladder Barrel. Order, transitions and rhythm follow the tradition as it was handed down.
What is the difference between Classical and Contemporary Pilates?
Classical Pilates stays faithful to the original exercise order and system of Joseph Pilates. Contemporary Pilates modifies exercises, order and equipment and adds other elements from a variety of movement practices. Both have value — we deliberately specialize in the classical, authentic method.
Is Classical Pilates suitable for beginners?
Yes. The classical system is inherently progressive: we begin with the foundational exercises and build complexity and intensity individually. To start, we recommend a private session.
Do I need experience before joining?
No, you need no prior experience. All that matters is a willingness to practise with focus and consistency. We guide you through the fundamentals step by step.
